Transforming Produced Water Treatment & Removing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)

Stochastic Research develops engineered synthetic clays that remove NORM from produced water with unmatched precision and efficiency.

This innovative approach not only protects equipment and the environment but also enables operators to reclaim and reuse treated water safely.

  • Captures radium and other NORM
  • Delivers 10× better performance than existing treatments
  • Enables cleaner water, lower costs, and reduced equipment contamination.

Transforming Produced Water Treatment

Stochastic Research develops next-generation synthetic clays engineered to solve some of the oil & gas industry’s most urgent water challenges. Using advanced computer-aided design, our team creates clays that selectively bind specific contaminants found in produced water—most critically NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) such as radium. When contaminated water passes through our material, the clay captures the target element with extreme precision, leaving clean water behind. The resulting spent clay can be safely removed and disposed of, dramatically simplifying handling and regulatory compliance.

The Problem with Current Approaches

Current treatment options struggle with high NORM loads, equipment contamination, and escalating disposal costs. Our clays deliver performance an order of magnitude better than existing technologies, enabling operators to reduce risk, protect infrastructure, and potentially reclaim up to 50% of treated water for beneficial reuse. This directly supports tightening regulations and offers a practical, low-energy alternative to distillation or long-term storage.
